British Open Golf Contenders 2012 - Nick Watney

There are a number of up and coming American golfers trying to make the breakthrough on the world stage and one of those is the exciting Nick Watney who continues to rise up the world rankings. 2011 has been an excellent year for Watney so far and many believe he is the form player heading into the British Open Golf at Sandwich, and that is reflected in his latest price with the bookmakers.

It really has been a breakthrough season for Watney who has moved into the top then in the world rankings with wins in the WGC-Cadillac Championships in March and most recently the prestigious AT&T National on the PGA tour. Watney produced a stunning third round at the AT&T when he shot a brilliant 62 to move into contention, that included a back nine of just 27 shots which was the second lowest of all time on the PGA Tour. It was a performance that made the golfing world sit up and take notice and he arrives in the UK full of confidence hoping to improve on his 7th place finish at St Andrews in 2010.

At the moment Watney is best known in Major Championships for his collapse at the USPGA Championship last season, he went into the final round with a three-shot lead but shot 81 to finish down in 18th place. That will be a memory Watney will want to erase as soon as possible and a good week at the British Open should do just that, he had a good week at St Andrews in 2010 so clearly likes links golf making him an attractive option in 2011.
